Here’s a tidbit you may or may not know. In 1816 Chattanooga was established as Ross’s Landing, but was also called Lookout City. The name Ross’s Landing was named after Cherokee Indian Chief, John Ross. It wasn’t until 1838 the name officially changed to Chattanooga. The name Chattanooga comes from the Creek Indians, meaning “rock coming to a point”. If you are most anywhere in the city you can see the “rock” which is Lookout Mountain. nooga.notes@gmail.com

Vince Gill will be in Chattanooga on Sept. 28 at the Tivoli Theatre to support the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County. Tickets are $30 and $35 for general admission. If you want a better time, go for the VIP tickets. Your $135 will get you a private coctail party, dinner, shuttle service to the Tivoli , primo seating at the concert and dessert reception after the concert. Well, if you answered yes to any of those questions, you’ll want to be at Coolidge Park on Saturday for Swingfest. This event begins at 5:30p with a dance lesson. Here are some tips to avoid the flu. Some of these are kind of a duh. Firstly, wash, wash, wash…everything. Wash your hands and anything you come into contact with at home. If you aren’t able to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer. Keep your distance when talking to people. If you cough or sneeze, do so in toward your elbow, not your hands. If you think you have any flu like symptoms, such as fever, achy joints, or chills, consult your doctor. This is very important. I know you get tired of hearing about this, and so do I. We have already had one little boy die in the area due to flu. Stay safe this flu season. nooga.notes@gmail.com

With Labor Day right around the corner, I thought I would give one rule of flag etiquitte. The number one rule is no frayed, faded, or funky flag flying allowed. Everyone loves the look of a beautiful new flag. The best plan of action for flag flyers is to have two or more flags for rotation. While one is flying have the other dry cleaned and any minor damage repaired. Once your funky old flag is no longer in flying condition, it should be retired. When your funky flag is ready for retirement, you can contact your local girl scout or boy scout troup, VFW, D.A.V., or other veteran’s service organization for a flag disposal ceremony. If you happen to see a funky flag at a business or civic building, call them and politely remind them that funky flags are disrespectful to our flag and our country. I got an e-mail asking me why I haven’t updated the notes lately. Well, fact is, there hasn’t been anything really noteworthy. I have been looking out for you and came up with some upcoming events. Here’s the first. There will be a community carnival tomorrow from 2p-6p at South Seminole Baptist Church, 1201 South Seminole Dr, East Ridge. http://southseminole.com/ Sounds like a lot of fun for kids. Get tickets early as this will probably sell out. All proceeds benefit the zoo. Tickets are only $30 for zoo members and $40 for non-members, but you can give a little extra .
